Dear Editor,
I am a home owner living in a gated community located on the East Bank of Demerara. On July 6, 2017 I received an email from the owners of the housing estate company stating that GTT would be in the area to start the process of connectivity of both internet and landlines.
However, on Saturday July 8th, I received an email from the estate owners indicating that GTT would not be allowed in to connect homes because the estate owners had signed an exclusive agreement with E-networks to provide the service of internet in the compound.
Please note that this contractual agreement was not made known to the home owners. Many of us (home owners) have expressed our dissatisfaction and feel powerless as the monthly bill we have to pay for internet with E-networks is $20,000 GY a month for only 20mbps and GTT is offering 50Mbps plus a landline. Plus you have to take E-networks cable subscription.
As such, I know that this is an infringement on my rights as a consumer. When I made contact with GTT I was informed that they will not return to the compound after the contractual agreement is completed. (November 1).
The estate owners have claimed that they will only allow GTT to enter the estate after November 1, however, in my conversations with GTT they indicated that if allowed in the compound they would just install the infrastructure and wait until November.
However, the owners still refused to allow GTT in. I believe the owners are being unfair and not revealing the truth of the agreement with E-networks. In addition, GTT had shown-up recently but was denied entrance.
I am aware of all the legality that applies to the sector. I am also aware of the fact that E-networks operations is one that is problematic with the government and as such any contractual agreement between E- networks and yourself has no legal standing.
This was verified when I checked the Public Utilities Commission website. I believe as a consumer my rights are being violated and would like to be given the choice of what service I require for my home. As such, I am seeking your assistance in getting some justice.
