Foreign Affairs Minister lauds improvement in relations with Canada
Foreign Affairs Minister, Carl Greenidge is pleased with the efforts of Canada’s outgoing High Commissioner, His Excellency Pierre Giroux, in forwarding relations with his country and the people of Guyana.

Noting the significant improvement in efforts to advance the relationship with Ottawa especially during High Commissioner Giroux’s tenure, Greenidge welcomed the proposal of the Canadian Government to extend its relationship with Guyana beyond trade and development through the establishment of a mechanism that would encourage regular political exchanges.
During a courtesy call on the Foreign Minister on Wednesday last, Giroux, who is also his country’s representative to Suriname, emphasized that his departure signalled an end of a cycle, but not the end of a friendship.
“I have enjoyed exceptionally open relations with the Guyana Government,” he stated.
For his part, Minister Greenidge said as a consequence of the High Commissioner’s work in Guyana, “Canada is well positioned here, not only in terms of lines of communication, but also of activities, contribution and commercial dealings.”
After two years of serving in both Guyana and Suriname, High Commissioner Giroux has been reassigned to the position of Vice Inspector-in-Chief of Missions.
Cabinet recently approved the appointment of his successor, Her Excellency Ms. Lilian Chatterjee, High Commissioner-designate to Guyana.
The establishment of formal diplomatic relations between the Cooperative Republic of Guyana and Canada coincided with Guyana’s independence on May 26, 1966. The current Guyanese and Canadian administrations, while both relatively new, remain committed to developing bilateral relations.
