What was supposed to be a fishing expedition turned out to be a tragedy, plunging the closely knitted community of Number Nine Village, West Coast Berbice, into a state of shock. This was the news of the demise of a teenaged student who hails from the village.
According to reports, 14-year- old President’s College student, Akeem Mangar, who hails from Number Nine Village, West Coast Berbice, was in company of a group of teenagers who at around 14:00 hours on Saturday, set out to go catch crabs on the foreshore.
The expedition had to be aborted as tragedy struck even before they arrived at their destination.
To get to the foreshore, the teenagers had to cross the façade canal to the north of the village, which is the main drainage canal serving the entire West Berbice. There is no bridge in the area.
Information received is that the boys were swimming across the canal when they observed that Akeem was having difficulties and attempted to rescue him. However, because of the strong current, they were unable to prevent him from going under.
When this publication visited, members of the community had already organised search parties in an attempt to recover the body, and at least up to 17:30 hours were still searching.
Scores villagers gathered in the vicinity hoping that the body would be quickly recovered. Meanwhile some could be seen trying to console the grieving parents, Parbatan Mangar, and Jennel Semple.
While the father was overcome by shock, the sobbing Jennel Semple, a teacher attached to the Woodley Park Secondary School, said that she was on West Coast Demerara when she received word that she had lost her only child who would have celebrated his 15th birthday next month.
The police have since called in for questioning those who were present at the time of the incident.
