– accused of attending to phone while driving
Last Friday night, a police corporal, Dervin Semple, who is stationed at the Mackenzie Police Station, Linden crashed a minibus registered BRR 249 at Letter T Public Road, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara.
He was returning from Berbice and was on his way to Linden when he offered a ride to two passengers.
The Police Corporal, said in a statement that around 20:30hrs, he was proceeding west along the road when he was suddenly blinded by a bright light of a vehicle proceeding in the opposite direction. This forced him to swerve further south and in the process the vehicle toppled.
Victims of the accident include Prince Hart, 62, of Paradise, East Coast Demerara, who is a relative of the Police Corporal, Dervin Semple, and Gregory Halley, 33, of Zeskendren, ECD.
Of the three men, Hart and the Corporal sustained minor injuries and were treated at the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital and eventually sent away.
A breathalyzer test was conducted on the driver and proved that he was not under the influence of alcohol.
Halley when contacted explained that he is “bed-ridden” and referred reporters to his sister who assisted willingly.
Previously, when he was questioned concerning the speed of the vehicle, he described that it was a “reasonable pace”.
Halley’s sister, who asked that her name not be disclosed, said that Gregory Halley was taken to the hospital by a doctor who works at the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital.
She explained that her brother suffered from lacerations to the neck, a dislocated left shoulder, and injuries to his lower back and spine since he was sitting in the front of the bus.
According to the victim’s sister, the driver of the bus was attending to a phone that was charging when he lost control of the vehicle and ended up in a trench.
