A Trinidadian was yesterday ordered to post $200,000 bail by Magistrate Alex Moore when he appeared in the Weldaad Magistrates’ Courts.
Twenty-eight-year-old Tarron Alexander, an electrical technician of Lot 188 BB Eccles, East Bank Demerara, denied the charge which alleged that on July 24 at Lovely Lass Public Road, West Coast Berbice, he drove vehicle GPP 4166 and caused the death of Keifer Campbell.
The defendant was represented by Attorney-at-Law Bernard DaSilva who asked that bail be granted to his client because he has never been convicted before.
Police Prosecutor Raquel Mars objected to bail being granted to the defendant citing the serious nature of the offence and the penalty the charge attracts.
However Magistrate Moore over-ruled the prosecutor objection and applied bail to the defendant. Conditions of the bail is that the defendant lodged his passport and report to the Providence Police Station every Friday until the completion of the trail.
The defendant will make his next court appearance on August 17 for report. According to reports the now deceased who was at the time riding a bike suddenly swerved into the path of the pick-up causing the left front of the vehicle to collide with the cyclist who fell onto the road.
According to information the cyclist was picked up in unconscious condition and rushed to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. A breathalyzer test was conducted on the defendant and no trace of alcohol was detected in his breath.
