…she now accuses police of brutality
The woman who was arrested by police for allegedly aiding and assisting a Camp Street Prison escapee is claiming physical harassment at the hands of ranks from Berbice and a CID rank from Georgetown. Her son was also arrested.
Tilawattie Singh, 38, of Ankerville, Port Mourant, and mother of the escapee, told this publication that police showed up at her home and barged into her yard, breaking her fence, and began searching her house. They then placed her under arrest, without providing an explanation of why she was being arrested and her home searched.
She stated that a rank attached to the Major Crimes Unit whom she recognized told her that she is needed at the Whim Police Station for questioning in relation to the Camp Street Prison escapee.
“I jump in the vehicle and they stop at Port Mourant Hospital bridge. They met with two other vehicle and they drove to Babu sluice that leads to the sea and then (Narine) walk to the vehicle. He tell dem other police fuh carry me to he.
From the minute meh step out the vehicle this man (Narine) dealt meh cuff to meh neck, temple and head. Me hold me head and me ah beg dem, “Ow officer; Wha meh do? Wha meh do?” Two others, a plait hair one and another one come and start beat me in me head and cuss meh up.” She stated that she was dragged in the water and on the ground while still beaten mercilessly by the ranks.
“Every time me ask wha dem ah beat meh fa dem na tell me. Then dem drive back to the cemetery wheh Jagan burn and dem stop. Then two mo jeep come and one CID detective. I know him well and he tek dem gun and ‘gun butt’ meh to me belly.
“Dem continue beating me and dem ask me wha me son name. I said Ravan and dem had meh phone and dem ask me which one ah dem numbers in me phone is me son. But my son doesn’t have a personal phone and I told them that”, she recounted.
Singh explained that she told the ranks that her son does not live with her and that she knew nothing. She said when she was eventually booked in at the Whim Police Station, she was asked if she knew why she was arrested, and she answered in the negative.
A rank then told her that she was being arrested for allegedly providing food to the escapee, Stafrie Alexander.
“I was bleeding when these people put me in the lockup and these people even refused to give me (sanitary pads) even though I told them I was bleeding. I am not here to lie on the police, police are here to protect us and I guess they should be truthful,” the woman said.
Kaieteur News understands that Singh was kept in custody for three days and was subsequently released on station bail, however she is calling on the relevant authorities to look into her allegations made against the police and provide her with some sort of justice.
“I want justice; I’m gonna take this very far”, Singh posited. Her son was also released from custody after complying with authorities during questioning.
