Dr. Avis Kelly, a graduate of the Howard University Dental School, cannot quench the fire she has to keep serving the country and her associates in the Caribbean population.
During the Medical Outreach this was demonstrated at the Leonora and Suddie Public Hospital as Dr. Kelly and her team from the Seventh Day Baptist Church along with the Helping Hand Health Ministries, which comprises 10 persons. The panel consists of three dentists, two physicians, two nurses and the support staff.
The inaugural trip by the Helping Hand Health Ministries to Guyana is intended to have the “young, aspiring, local health professionals fired up about the field of dentistry.” In the pursuit, Rehana Fareed, Natasha Alladin, Gavrielle Cave, Jalana Hartman and Kevin Henry have come together from the University of Guyana. They are all second and third year students. In addition, David Adams from the School of Medicine and Dentistry is there to help them accomplish their principle.
Kelly explained, “As a native of the Caribbean I have always had a passion to give back to the Caribbean people.” She went on to say how expectant she is that their exertion will be “well received and the needs of the people met.”
Kelly, after graduating from the Howard University Dental School in Washington DC made it her hometown. She originally came from Jamaica and has been conducting Health Mission Outreaches for over 30 years.
She, along with her team, uses their once a year retreat to visit various Caribbean countries to perform such medical outreaches.
According to Kelly, the people of Guyana can look forward to blood pressure testing, diabetic screening and dental care from the squad during their visit.
“The primary message is for persons to practise better health care by eating the required foods, drinking enough water, and utilising all the good nutrients that are available in moderation.”
A dental practitioner, Peola Marks, who is currently attached to the Leonora Hospital, happens to be overwhelmed to be associated with the “experienced team”. She views the option as a “gamer to fresh insight’ into her selected area of interest.
She noted, “Dentistry has been my passion for many years and I’m grateful for this opportunity to expound on my knowledge in the field.”
UG student, David Adams, who is connected to the hospital stated that it is his “first time” being involved in the realistic functions of dental care. Like Marks, he is anticipating the days to come. He went on to state that participating with the team, he has developed much knowledge that will be “very beneficial” to not only him, but also to those with whom he associates.
The team is expected to leave Guyana, today.
