Dear Editor,
On, Wednesday July 26, the Council met with 40 leaders of local community groups operating in the City and held discussions on the extant conditions of local neighbourhoods and approaches needed to improve the quality of life for citizens in the local context. The purpose of the meeting was to build necessary and enduring relationships between local communities and the Council. The meeting was chaired by Town Clerk Royston King in an environment of cordiality, understanding and trust.
Town Clerk King explained that citizens are the real guardians of local communities and that all residents of local communities have the right and responsibility to secure the integrity of those communities at the meeting the Town Clerk said the Council is committed to;
1) Working with local communities in bottom up approach to involve communities in the work programme of the Council.
2) Strengthen the capacity of community groups to participate in the decision making process of the Council through education, awareness programmes; workshops, conferences and training programmes which would cater to the specific needs of community groups.
3) Help leaders to prepare project proposals and requests for financial assistance from Council and other institutions.
4) Assist community leaders to identify and mobilize resources as no nonprofit groups to advance the interests of local communities.
5) To develop a structured approach to facilitate information sharing and feedback.
The Council is pleased that many community groups have already initiated programmes to secure the integrity of local communities. The Mayor and City Council wishes to encourage citizens to organize themselves into groups to mobilize resources to help improve the conditions of local neighbourhoods and restore Georgetown to its former glory.
