– girlfriend, other woman detained
Marlon Jeffrey, the 18-year-old suspected bandit who escaped from the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) on Wednesday was nabbed yesterday morning in a house in Brutus Street, Agricola, East Bank Demerara.
Marlon Jeffrey called “Melvor” and “Buck” allegedly hopped into an empty barrel when he realised that police ranks were at the house looking for him.
A police official said that the suspect’s girlfriend and a female relative of hers were among four persons found in the house.
The women and two men were taken into custody. The police received information that the wanted man was hiding out at the location and that someone was treating the gunshot wound he sustained to his back.
The four persons, according to sources, will be charged for harbouring a fugitive. Only last week, the shot man’s mother, Peggy Jeffrey and his sister visited this newspaper to indicate that the young man had been wrongfully shot by the police. They claimed that they had no idea where the young man was, and his sister claimed that the police wrongfully shot her sibling. She had also accused the police of ‘kidnapping’ him from the hospital to cover their tracks.
The 18-year-old man was shot by police ranks after he tried to escape from them two Mondays ago. He was held for possession of a firearm and ammunition and two counts of discharging a gun. After being shot, he was taken to the hospital where he was being treated for his injuries—in the presence of a rank. It was sometime around 02:00hrs on Wednesday that he escaped from the GPHC, ditching a red dress, wig and a bra which someone had taken for him to disguise.
“Maybe when he see the police had gone and everyone was sleeping, he just run and leave the dress and wig behind, because it would have taken too long for him to get dressed,” a police source opined. The errant policeman is still under close arrest. Reports are that the rank had been sleeping in another ward when the shot suspect escaped. According to reports, Jeffrey removed a tube that was inserted in his back and escaped.
It is unclear when the rank on duty was made aware that the prisoner had escaped but reports are that when ranks went to the hospital to investigate, they found that the keys were in the handcuffs. The police are now investigating whether there was any collusion between the suspected bandit and the policeman who was guarding him.
