Just after she defeated 13-year-old Caribbean U-15 Squash Champion Shomari Wilshire in the Men’s Open of the Digicel 2017 National Senior Squash Championships at the Georgetown Club on Friday night Nicolette Fernandes, who played in the Women’s and Men’s categories, said she was impressed by the talent of the youngster.
Wilshire played clever Squash and used the angles of the Court to exchange lengthy rallies with the former Caribbean Squash Queen, prompting Fernandes to say that at such a young age Wilshire demonstrates excellent Squash IQ.
“He played unbeaten in the recent Caribbean Junior Championships which speaks volumes about his talent. He understands Squash,” said the 34-year-old Fernandes.
“He is just 13 and can only get better. Once he continues to work hard and remain focused and committed he has the potential to develop into one of Guyana’s best Squash players as he gets older and more experienced,” stated Fernandes, whose highest ranking on the Professional Circuit is 19.
President of the Guyana Squash Association Robin Low shared Fernandes’ view about Wilshire promising future.
“If he continues to play like this there is no doubt that he will one day be one of Guyana’s best ever players. He is so level headed, thinks a lot on the court and plays smart Squash and once he gets older and bigger and put on some muscle he will be able to strike the ball with more power and has the ability to dominate for a long time at Caribbean level,” Low noted.
“Young Shomari has a special ability to quickly read what happening on the court and in Squash muscle is not as important as skill and knowing what to do in pressure situations,” Fernandes informed.
Shomari is the son of former National and Southern Caribbean Champion Garfield Wilshire and seems to follow in his father’s footsteps and many feel that if he continues to progress at the rate he is doing he could surpass his father’s success in the high intensity sport.
Shomari made his senior National Squash debut in this tournament and began with a win in the Men’s Open with a hard fought win against Nicolas Narain.
