A vagrant who chopped his friend because he was wearing his pants was yesterday sentenced to three years imprisonment by Senior Magistrate Leron Daly in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Devon Jackson had earlier pleaded guilty to the charge which read that on June 26 at Charlotte Street, he maliciously wounded the virtual complainant Michael Mohammed.
Facts presented by Police Prosecutor Sanj Singh stated that on the day in question, at around 19:00hrs, the virtual complainant was at Charlotte Street in the vicinity of Beharry Automotive Limited where he was lying on the pavement on a cardboard.
The court heard that the accused approached him with a cutlass and ordered him to get up from his sleeping spot.
The Prosecutor told the court that Mohammed had informed the defendant that he was unable to stand up since he had a laceration on his right foot. Jackson in return told the Mohammed “I ain’t get time with the cut on your foot. Get up from my spot.”
The court heard that after Mohammed refused to get up, Jackson dealt him several lashes about his body with a cutlass.
The victim after receiving the lashes got up and tried to run, and it was then that the accused noticed that he was wearing his pants.
The prosecutor told the court that after Jackson saw Mohammed with his pants he took the cutlass and cut off the pants from his waist.
Mohammed tried to resist his efforts and it was then that Jackson dealt him several chops about his body.
The victim then called out for help and he was then taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital in an ambulance where he was admitted.
Prosecutor Singh told the court that the victim received several chops about his right hand and head.
The matter was reported and the accused was arrested and charge for the offence.
When given a chance to address the court, Jackson said “Me and the man is friends, we are both homeless and we does sleep on the pavement together. The day before he took away my money and I was upset with him. The night when I reach at the pavement to go sleep he had my cardboard and he had on my pants and that’s how we start argue and I chop him with the cutlass.”
