Twenty-four year-old Nkosi Gittens, of East Front Road, La Penitence, yesterday made an appearance before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, where he denied a charge of assault.
Gittens denied the charge which read that on July 18 at Middle Road, La Penitence, he unlawfully and maliciously inflicted grievous bodily harm on Ronell Ault.
Police Prosecutor Sanj Singh told the court that the Ault and Gittens are known to each other, but do not have any friendly relationship.
The court heard that on the day in question, Ault was sitting among several friends in an alleyway when Gittens approached him with a baseball bat and dealt him several lashes about his body. Ault sustained a broken right hand.
The matter was reported and the accused was arrested and charged.
The prosecutor asked that bail be denied citing the prevalence of the offence.
The prosecutor also told the court that Gittens has a robbery under-arms matter before Magistrate Dylon Bess, also in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The prosecution’s objection was upheld and Gittens was remanded to prison. He will make his next court appearance on August 11.
Meanwhile in Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan’s courtroom, two miners were placed on $15,000 bail each after they had denied an assault charge.
Michael Agar, 20, of South Ruimveldt and Randolph Ramsammy, 18, of Kamaka Waterfront, Mabaruma, North West District, both denied the charge which read that on July 17 at Mabaruma, they assaulted Shemroy Hercules, with intent to rob him.
Police Prosecutor Arvin Moore objected to bail being granted to the defendants, citing that they were both positively identified by the victim.
The two men will make their next court appearance on August 22 in the Mabaruma Magistrate’s Courts.
