What has been described as “inept” management of traffic on the East Bank of Demerara continues to be a source of concern for commuters and drivers who utilise the link on a daily basis.
Just yesterday, several calls were made to this publication where persons complained about a “huge” truck blocking off the traffic on eastern carriageway of the road.
One caller told Kaieteur News that the truck was waiting to turn into the Diamond Housing Scheme, however, due to the narrow bridge and the traffic exiting the scheme, it was impossible to do so.
“It was virtually impossible for the truck to turn in, because the bridge is narrow and by other cars were coming out, the truck just stopped there and the traffic built up all the way back to DDL (Demerara Distillers Limited). Imagine a bridge to one of the biggest housing schemes in this country cannot facilitate a truck and a normal-size car to pass,” said an irate caller who claimed to have been heading to the airport at the time.
Kaieteur News was informed by a police source yesterday that during the peak hours, ranks are deployed to the junction to direct the traffic. The ranks, however, leave after the traffic is “normalised”, he said.
The source went on to say that it was difficult to have ranks stationed at that junction “24/7” due to the fact that the ranks need to be deployed to other areas to carry out exercises to curb traffic offences.
“We need to focus on other areas as well,” he said.
Meanwhile, taxi drivers at the Diamond Housing Scheme Car Park also complained bitterly about an invasion of “private-hire” cars at the facility.
One taxi-driver said that he has made numerous complaints to the authorities over private cars being used as taxis. He went on to say that because the park has been allocated only for taxis, the private-hire cars are forced to park on one of the two lanes of the eastern carriageway.
This, he said, results in traffic heading south, having to merge into one lane.
He alleged that this “illegal” activity continues to pass under the radar of ranks from the Diamond and Golden Grove Police outposts.
“We have police (officers) that pass every night on bikes and they don’t do nothing.”
