Four days after Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard intercepted a large quantity of
cocaine in Pomeroon River, Essequibo, two farmers yesterday appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts and were remanded to prison for allegedly trafficking over 209 pounds of cocaine.
Appearing before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan were 45-year-old John DeSilva called Martin of Grant Strong Hope, Pomeroon River, Essequibo Coast and 34-year-old Kevin Fitzroy Gordon of Lot 18 Jib Housing Scheme, Essequibo.
The defendants both denied the charge which read that on July 17 at Pomeroon River, Essequibo, they both trafficked 94.945 kilograms of cocaine.
Both defendants were represented by Attorney-at-Law Mark Waldron, who asked that his clients be given a speedy trial.
The matter was prosecuted by Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) Prosecutor, Konyo Sandiford, who asked that bail be denied citing the prevalence of the offence and the penalty the charge attracts.
The defendants will make their next court appearance on August 28 at the Charity Magistrates’ Court.
