Despite the controversy surrounding his health, President David Granger has maintained that former Minister of Education, Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine has not resigned from his post as a member of the Government.
Speaking with the media yesterday, Granger did not confirm the resignation by Dr. Roopnaraine.
The President categorically stated, “ (Roopnaraine) cannot resign until I have accepted the resignation.”
He however did confirm that he received a letter from Dr. Roopnaraine, but that he could not disclose the contents of the letter.
He said that he is scheduled to meet with Dr. Roopnaraine and discuss the matter, but as of right now Dr. Roopnarine remains a member of Cabinet.
Last month it was announced that Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine, the WPA leader, had been reassigned to the Ministry of the Presidency where he will head the Ministry of Public Service.
Roopnaraine, 74, has been in ill-health for a while now, even ending up in the hospital. The administration would have been worried about his workload at the big-budget Ministry of Education.
Minister within the Ministry of Education, Nicolette Henry, has since been performing the duties of the Minister of Education.
WPA is a component of the A Partnership For National Unity (APNU), one of the partners of the coalition government with the Alliance For Change (AFC).
As part of an agreement, WPA ended up with the Ministry of Education portfolio.
