The 2017 Digicel Senior National Squash Championships commenced on Tuesday evening at the Georgetown Club Courts and four matches were played in three of the four categories that are being contested. Javed Rahaman and Adam Alves began with victories in the Men’s Open while Khalil Ail won in the Men’s 35-49 division and David Fernandes emerged victorious in his Men’s Over-50 match. With National Junior players Taylor Fernandes and Rebecca Low urging their fathers on, Fernandes showed better court coverage in his win over Robin Low in the lone veterans Men’s Over-50 match. Low, the President of the Guyana Squash Association (GSA) put up a spirited fight in the first game to lose 9-11 but Fernandes, the Vice-President, won the next two games 11-6, 11-6 to take the match in straight games.
In the Men’s Open division both matches were won in four games. In the first match Rahaman outlasted Steven Xavier winning 12 – 10, 4 – 11, 11 – 6, 11 – 9 while Alves defeated Douglas De Groot 11 – 8, 8 – 11, 11 – 6, 11 – 6.
In the Men’s 35 – 49 clash, Alli won in straight games over Allan Downes 11 – 6, 11 – 6, 11 – 9 and Joe Mekdeci defeated Medhi Ramdhani 11 – 1, 11 – 8, 11 – 5. The tournament was scheduled to continue last night with the round-of-sixteen matches in the Men’s Open, first round matches in the Women’s Open and more round-robin matches in the Veterans categories.
