Engineers have estimated that some $115.7 million will be spent to rehabilitate
the sinking Bagotville Bridge, West Bank Demerara.
Four contractors have already submitted bids to carry out the works. The tenders were open at National Procurement and Tender Administrative Board (NPTAB), Georgetown yesterday.
The table below illustrates the names of the bidders that are vying for the project, along with their respective bids (amount):
The Bagotville Bridge was closed to heavy-duty vehicles about three weeks ago after the eastern lane began to sink. This was due to two damaged supporting beams. The piles supporting these beams are also exhibiting cracks.
Residents have reported that despite the sinking section being cordoned off, the bridge appears to be sinking more every day.
When this publication visited Bagotville yesterday, the eastern end of the structure was cordoned off and ranks from the La Grange Police Station were seen directing traffic. The western side of the bridge is facilitating north and south-bound traffic.
Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson, during a recent media engagement, had stressed the importance of having the Bagotville Bridge fixed within the shortest time possible, noting that the western side of the structure was also being threatened.
The Ministry of Public Infrastructure would have already met with the Regional Democratic Council (RDC), Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs), the Guyana Police Force (GPF) and Guyana Power and Light (GPL), to apprise them of the current situation.
The works will be carried out as “emergency works”. The Ministry of Finance would have been approached for the necessary funds.
This was part of the plan outlined by Patterson some two weeks ago.
Meanwhile, heavy-duty vehicles were being diverted via the Canal Number One Polder Access Road and La Parfaite Harmonie Access Road.
Two weeks ago, the La Parfaite Harmonie Access Road was in a deplorable condition. However, one of the contractors that worked on that road, Gaico Construction and General Services Incorporated, immediately carried out the remedial works.
