Dear Editor,
Please permit me this little space in your editorial corner to throw in my pound with those that are against the lavish ministerial lifestyle. It is with great sadness as a long standing supporter of the PNC, to see such abuse of privilege and insult to the electorate. As a public servant who is working in the public service for the past 17 years, earns an after tax salary of $87,000 per month to support a family of three, utilities, travelling, etc. How can the APNU-AFC government see it fit to rent a house to the tune of $500,000 for a minister and see it as nothing wrong, moreover justify it with claims that she came from a home?
We the electorate tried to forgive this government for their huge salary increase followed by the no apology statement, but this new development is another blow to our minds. Minister Broomes now saw it fit to sit in the media claiming that the government took her from a home and she’s a humble servant, but to whom? It can be no one but herself and family, why not live in a $60,000 rented house?
Since a true servant of the people shares a life akin to that of the people that put you there and not that of a King\Queen. I can only recall two cabinets where there were humble servants and those are the cabinet of H.E. Dr. Cheddi Jagan and H.E. Desmond Hoyte. At least those in the APNU+AFC government can boast of being able to send their children to the best private schools even though they implemented VAT on private education and more so; what they are spending on pet care is probably that of the average public servants wage.
While many young people who voted for this government and was promised a good life had to resort to cleaning fish at the Medow Bank fishing complex and selling DOG FOOD on the streets, is this where our tax dollars are going? I felt great when the PPP government who for the past 17 years were known for corruption and mismanagement lost government, but I now wonder if we’re being governed by a replacement. They are always in the media talking about OIL MONEY but why didn’t they wait on that oil money to give themselves such a large salary increase and pay those exuberant prices for house rent? I wish the coalition government ‘ALL THE BEST IN THE 2020 ELECTIONS but note; they’ve lost three votes from my home.
