“Curry and roti, roti and curry” arguments of a Guyanese lawyer

Dear Editor,

I am not a lawyer. However, I have been around the courts and the legal profession for about 40 years. I have been reading the lengthy letters of Maxwell Edwards published in the press over the past 2 years. They all have two things in common: they are only published by the Kaieteur News and they are all highly critical of the PPP and in, particular, Mr Anil Nandlall, the Former Attorney-General.

Someone informed me that Attorney General, Basil Williams, patronizes Maxwell Edwards for him to respond to Nandlall in the press as William, clearly, is unable to do so. So Mr. Edwards is the 6th Advisor to the AG! However, my information is that Edwards is not well and doctors have advised against him working or undertaking much mental strain.

In KN 9/07/2017, Mr Edwards is at it again. In a long rant in the letter columns, Edwards pours his bile and venom at Nandlall. Anyone reading that letter can feel the deep seated anger with which it is written and sense the frustration which the writer seems to be enduring. I cannot remember Mr Nandlall ever responding to any of Edwards’ idiotic and toxic ramblings. That must be contributing to Mr Edwards anguish, pain and aggression which are evident in his writing.

In his latest written outburst, he makes the “intellectually stellar” argument that Commonwealth Law Reports and Law Reports of the Commonwealth are 2 different books. Learned Counsel then proceeds to treat his readers to a dissertation on the essential differences between these books. Right here one recognizes the wisdom of his doctors advise: that he should not be engaged in heavy mental tasks (not that this).

The fact that LRC and CRL are different books has never been disputed. The issue is that only one of those two sets of books has been the subject of the dispute ongoing for over 2 years now, that is, LRC. However, it was recently discovered by SOCU and their constellation of legal advisors that a Court Order issued against them 4 months ago, and which they bound themselves by for 4 months, contains an error: instead of LRC it reads CRL.

In any event, this “roti and curry ” and “curry and roti” argument which is being “intellectualized”by Edwards et al, has already been rejected by a High Court Judge who has impounded the challenged search warrant. It’s a real pity that Mr Edwards is a legal practitioner who only practices law in the letter columns of the KN or he could have joined Justice Claudette Singh SC and turn up in Court where the real arguments take place!

Since Mr Edwards is now a regular critic of others it is only fair that the public knows a few things about him. Also, must also answer a few questions regarding a public office which he held. In all my years around the courts, I have never seen Mr Edwards practicing as a lawyer, either privately, or for the State. I know he was a magistrate for a number of years. He was appointed under the same PPP Government he lambastes so frequently. I will now thread very carefully in what I will reveal because I would like it to be published. While he was on the Bench, there was a widespread perception that Mr Edwards was not what he should have been. Note; I am not saying that he was this or that; I am merely referring to the existence of a perception.

I know he was at a Chinese Restaurant on the western side of upper Sheriff Street, almost every evening. Persons referred to it as his annex. I am told that, that reference emanated from him, as he would invite persons, including lawyers, to meet him at his “annex”. I call upon Mr Edwards to man up and tell us what those meetings were about. Were they about law, the practice of law, theoretical law, unorthodox law etc. He needs to tell the public the role that his brother played in all of this; why his brother was so active on his behalf and in what areas. I will stop here for now. More revelations will come soon.
