Twenty-eight-year-old, Zafar Khan was on Thursday sentenced to one year imprisonment for causing the death of an elderly woman. Khan was sentenced by Senior Magistrate Fabayo Azore in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The magistrate said that she was satisfied with the evidence provided from the prosecution witnesses who were led by Assistant Superintendent of Police Stephen Telford
The court heard that on May 3, 2016, at Fifth Street, Section A Block Y , Golden Grove, East Bank Demerara, Khan drove motor pick-up GSS 9553 in a manner dangerous to the public, causing the death of 82-year-old Keturah Dalgetty.
According to reports, the elderly woman who resided at Lot 215 Samatta Point, Grove, East Bank Demerara, was struck down when the accused was reportedly reversing on the access road.
It was reported that Dalgetty fell to the ground and was run over by the vehicle.
According to reports, the driver, after realizing he had hit something, came out of the vehicle and found the woman lying on the road in an unconscious state. He then rushed her to the East Bank Demerara Regional Hospital where she succumbed to the injuries.
