A businessman yesterday made an appearance before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts for having in his possession, ammunition without being the holder of a firearm licence.
Paul Hector, 41, of Lot 30 Land of Canaan, East Bank Demerara, denied the charge which alleged that on June 30, last, at Water Front, Port Kaituma, North West, he had in his possession 30 live rounds of 9 mm ammunition when he was not the holder of a firearm licence.
Hector’s attorney told the court that her client is the proprietor of shop which is located in the North West District.
The lawyer added that her client has never been charged before and asked that bail be granted to him. The ammunition was found at a shop where her client was consuming alcohol with friends, she said.
She told the court that if bail is granted to her client he will return to court for the trial.
However facts presented by the prosecution stated differently. Prosecutor Moore objected to bail on the grounds that no special reasons were put forward by the attorney.
The prosecutor added that the ammunition was found in the back pocket of Hector’s pants, after a police officer conducted a physical search on him.
The defendant was remanded to prison and he will make his next court appearance on August 8 in the Matthews Ridge Magistrate’s Court.
