Guyanese, two co-accused refused bail by Bajan court for drugs shipment charge

Barbados (Barbados Today) – Three men – two Barbadians and a Guyanese – who were allegedly found with more than B’dos$2.2 million worth of drugs in the island’s territorial waters last week, were remanded to HMP Dodds, Tuesday, after appearing in the Oistins Magistrates’ Court.
And Magistrate Elwood Watts told David Ian Brathwaite, 64, of Third Avenue Parris Gap, Westbury Road, St Michael; Michael Emmanuel Yarde, 42, of Drax Hall Jump, St George; and Abdool Sameer Manan, 37, of Georgetown, Guyana, that they could only apply for bail through the High Court.
Brathwaite and Yarde, both fishermen, are charged with possession of cannabis, unlawfully trafficking cannabis, possession with intent to supply cannabis, and importation of cannabis.
The two were not required to plead to the indictable charges, or those of possession of cocaine, unlawfully trafficking cocaine, possession with intent to supply cocaine, and importation of the drug.
The offences allegedly occurred on June 29, last, in the waters just off Maxwell, Christ Church.
Manan, a goldsmith, is also accused along with the Barbadians of conspiring to traffic cocaine and cannabis into the country.
The Guyanese man is separately accused of trafficking in cocaine and cannabis within Barbados’ territorial waters. Manan, who is being represented by attorney-at-law Samuel Legay, was not required to plead to the charges.
The cannabis, which weighed 160 pounds, had an estimated street value on $160,000, while the cocaine weighed 50 kilogrammes and is worth $2.2 million.
“Given the street value of the [drugs], the security of these gentlemen will not be met with household articles and the like,” the magistrate said, referring to the items sureties put up to secure bail for accused.
“Their security will be better served in the High Court, so [to] secure their attendance at court.”
However, attorney-at-law Arthur Holder, who is representing Yarde, asked that his client be escorted to the hospital for his dialysis treatment before being remanded.
“My client is a dialysis patient and has to go to the hospital today. He goes twice weekly – Monday and Thursday,” Holder informed Magistrate Watts.
The request was granted.
After a 28-day remand, the three accused men will make a second appearance in the Oistins Court on July 28.
