Temporary works were done on the Charity River dam last week to prevent the Pomeroon River from overflowing the sunken dam. The team consisting of councillors, personnel from the Ministry of Public Infrastructure and the Sea
Defence was led by Regional Chairman Daveanand Ramdatt.
Since 2015 the Charity river dam has been sinking despite all efforts to build and reinforce it. It is believed that to date the dam has sunk to more than two feet.
During high tides the swollen Pomeroon River would usually top the dam contributing to flooding in the Charity. These floods in turn threaten the livelihood of residents in the area since their livestock and other valuables are destroyed.
Based on inspections and discussions with farmers by the RDC team, urgent works are needed to address the matter. The need for urgent attention by the Ministry of Public Infrastructure was highlighted by Mr. Ramdatt.
In writing to the Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson, the Regional Chairman commented, “In view of the danger that this dam can create during high tides and the rapid sinking, urgent and timely intervention is hereby sought.”
According to Regional Chairman Ramdatt, “The river dam contract was awarded to a contractor to have works started and completed as soon as possible. Unfortunately the contractor is still awaiting the necessary materials from an overseas supplier.”
The Charity River Dam is an area that is vulnerable to flooding. As recently as Monday there were reports of overflowing at the river dam. Some 200 sand bags were laid along the edge of the dam as a temporary solution to prevent the overtopping.
Residents from the area gave positive reports to the RDC indicating that the sand bags had helped. However residents are still looking forward to a permanent solution to the problem.
