At just 10 years old, Shakira Peters has suffered two episodes of stroke and undergone
countless blood transfusions.
The health complications are consequential to sickle cell anemia; a disease which attacks the red blood cells.
Persons who have sickle cell disease can become more likely to get infections because the damaged cells eventually clog the spleen.
A severe attack, known as sickle cell crisis, can cause pain because blood vessels can become blocked or the defective red blood cells can damage organs in the body.
Shakira Peters has suffered seven years of such complications as a result of the disease. She has suffered cerebral vascular accident which was diagnosed three years ago from which she became verbally irresponsive and suffered psychomor retardation.
Doctors reported that Peters has been stable since then but it is important for her to travel with her parents and medications to India.
As such, the girl’s parents, Nicola and Ovid Peters of Linden have been appealing to the public for financial assistance so that their daughter can receive much needed surgery at a Medical Centre in India.
Nicola Peters told Kaieteur News on Friday that her daughter was diagnosed with Sickle Cell Anemia on September 26, 2010.
At a press briefing, the family was presented with a $500,000 cheque from Tesouro Resources and Grey Wolf Resources, a mining company headquartered in Kingston, Georgetown.
General Manager of the company, Jaswick Williams, said that over the years, the CEO of Tesouro Resources Mr. Deen Hassan has consistently made donations to a number of persons and organizations to assist with various causes.
The money was in addition to donations of $100,000 each by the Guyana Oil Company and BM SOAT Auto sales.
The Peters’ expressed gratitude for the donation which they said will go a long way to cover medical expenses for their daughter.
The mother said that while her husband works as a taxi driver, “She is willing to go work but her daughter‘s condition prevents her from doing so. I cannot because no daycare or school wants to keep her because of her condition. She had two attacks of stroke in the past, one in 2011, and 2013.”
Recounting her daughter’s battle with the disease, the mother said that ever since the diagnosis, Shakira has been in the hospital twice a week to undergo blood transfusions.
“Her doctor said the only option now to save her life and give her a bright future is to have a bone marrow transplant.
“My family and I would be extremely grateful for whatever way the public can help.”
According to documents seen by newspaper, the child‘s medical expenses range between US$32,000 and US$35,000. The money represents room charge, medicines and consumables (food).
The quotation from Artmetus Medicare Services limited in India explained that the patient has a 60 % success rate with the Haploidentical transplant.
The patient is also required to stay in the medical facility for four to six weeks prior to her discharge.
Persons interested in making donations can do so by contacting the family on telephone numbers 444-8420 or 684-7683 or via Republic Bank through account number 766-0129.
