A businessman was yesterday able to breathe a little easier after seven charges of obtaining money by false pretence against him were dismissed by City Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Twenty-eight year-old Iqwas Arkhan of Eccles, East Bank Demerara, who is the proprietor of a spare parts store, was accused of uttering several Bank of Nova Scotia cheques in the sum of 14.5M to Farouk Yusuf, knowing that he did not have the said sum to satisfy the amounts.
Arkhan had pleaded not guilty to the allegations after they were read to him on his first appearance and was granted bail in the sum of $700,000 by the magistrate.
However, the matter was subsequently dismissed after the virtual complainant (Yusuf) refused to provide the court with evidence against the defendant.
Arkhan was represented by Attorney-at-law Sonia Parag.
