Shop owner runs after gunmen with bottles, son shot to foot
A 21-year-old man was shot to the foot yesterday morning when he and his father ran after
Saroj Singh in front of her shop yesterday.
three gunmen who had raided their home and gun-butted them.
Suraj Narine had to be treated after sustaining a gunshot wound to the left foot. He and his father, Thajurduth Narine, 48, ran behind the gunmen with bottles who raided their home and shop around 09:30 hrs.
The bandits, believed to be in their 20s and all armed escaped with $400,000 cash and jewelry from their victims.
As the men were escaping on foot, they pulled a passerby out of his vehicle, gun-butted him and escaped in the man’s car which they later abandoned.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) in a release said that they are making stringent effort to apprehend the suspects who robbed the family and a salesman of his valuables and motorcar which was found abandoned.
According to information received, the three armed bandits entered the shop and held 20-year-old Narendra Narine at gunpoint.
The young man’s mother, Saroj Singh, said that she was in the shop and her son was at the side when the three men approached the young man and asked for two pounds of plantains.

demanded him to go inside.
“I see them and I started to run and one of them was running behind me and when he see my husband in the kitchen garden, he stopped chasing me and went to he and tell he don’t holler,” the woman recalled.
She said that the three bandits—all armed– took her husband and son to the lower flat of the house and spent about 20 minutes ransacking the place.
“My big son (Suraj Narine) was sleeping upstairs but they didn’t go up because when they asked my small son who upstairs, he said no one,” the woman said. She added that the men gun-butted and beat Narendra Narine and her husband.
Singh noted that as the men were leaving on foot, her big son and husband ran behind them and pelt bottles.
“They were firing shots at my husband and son. They loaded up and fire…it was a lot of shots,” she noted. It was at this point that the 21-year-old was shot.
The police said that whilst fleeing, the bandits were joined by two other armed accomplices.
The five gunmen stopped a motorcar driven by a 47-year-old salesman, took his cash, cellular phones and his vehicle and fled the scene. The vehicle was later found abandoned in the same village.
When this newspaper visited the scene yesterday, crime scene ranks were still interviewing the victims.
Investigations are ongoing.
