Tecona Welcome, who was reportedly intoxicated when she slammed a motorcar she was
driving into the Liliendaal Bridge, Greater Georgetown, killing one of the five passengers in the vehicle, has been charged with driving under the influence (DUI).
The accident which occurred Saturday night left Debra Pompey, of Lot 473 Belle West Housing Scheme, West Bank Demerara, dead.
Those injured have been identified as 20-year-old Rodlyn Grace of Lot 24 Blygezight Gardens, Georgetown; Shameica Martin, 18, of Lot 84 Sideline Dam, Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara; 26-year-old Teneisha Hubbard of Lot 473 Belle West, West Bank Demerara; and Saskiya Boyer, 30, of Lot 228 Lodge, Georgetown.
Kaieteur News understands that the women were celebrating at the Giftland Mall after attending a bridal shower. The car, PSS 7195 was reportedly proceeding west along the Railway Embankment at a fast rate when the driver lost control and slammed into the southern rail of the bridge.
Welcome, 27, of Lot 391 Austin Street, Campbellville, Georgetown, pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleged that she drove the car while her breath alcohol level exceeded the legal limit. She was granted bail in the sum of $20,000 after she appeared before Magistrate Alisha George on Monday at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Courts.
Kaieteur News understands that police investigations are still ongoing as it relates to charging Welcome with causing death by dangerous driving.
