A pedal cyclist is now dead after he was struck down by a Canter along the Skeldon Line Path
Public Road.
Dead is Yatandeo Hiralall, 59, of Lot 7 Line Path, Skeldon. He was reportedly riding north along the western carriageway of the Skeldon Public Road at approximately 7.30 pm, when he reportedly attempted to overtake a Canter truck, GKK 7698.
However, according to reports, Hiralall was struck from the rear by the said truck.
The driver who is presently in police custody was tested for alcohol but this proved negative.
An eyewitness told reporters that he heard a loud noise and immediately ran out his house, there he saw Hiralall lying next to a drain, with his bicycle on the parapet.
He stated that he saw the Canter speeding away even as himself and other neighbours attempted to assist the injured man to the hospital. The Canter that allegedly hit the man returned but failed to offer any assistance.
Hiralall was rushed to the Skeldon Public Hospital for medical attention where he later succumbed.
Ramdai Hiralall, the dead man’s wife, related that her husband left home around 6:00 hours yesterday morning to “ride out he birds”.
The grieving woman said she was finishing up her chores when she was informed that her husband had met with an accident and was at the hospital.
She recalled seeing Hiralall at the hospital with a swollen foot. “He didn’t get none injury outside, the doctor seh he get internal injury and that he na get head injury”, the woman said.
According to her, the doctors at the Skeldon Hospital informed her that Hiralall would have to be transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital to undergo a few tests but claimed that there was no available ambulance to transport her husband, leaving him waiting for hours before being transferred.
“Me ask where the ambulance deh but the doctor say about 40 minutes more and by the time that the doctor come out and tell me he dead. The ambulance take long to come from 7:30 (pm) time till 10 (pm) it meet”, she stressed.
The grieving woman believes that her husband could have been saved if not for the delay in having him transported.
He succumbed to his injuries sometime around 11 pm.
Hiralall leaves to mourn his two children, wife, other relatives and friends.
