Jun 27, 2017 Letters
Dear Editor,
There were two sport items which appeared in KN Friday, June 23 2017 edition, that caught my attention. The first, it was a red letter day with the admission to full test playing status for Afghanistan and Ireland. These two countries have been knocking on the door of test cricket for quite some time. It sure is a landmark achievement for these two nations. We do look forward to their conquests in the longer format of the game as they have proven themselves in the other formats. The other item has to do with the AAG. It seems this organization has found itself in a financial dilemma after hosting the recent South American Junior Championships.
This is indeed a most unfortunate outcome, but from the article it can be discerned the Organization, it seems went into negotiations with a rush of blood after the original host, Bolivia, reneged on its commitment to host the Championships.
There are no winners in this debacle, only losers, as athletes, looking forward to this weekend’s Senior Championships in Paraguay, will have to miss the event, unless they can pay their own way to attend. What an inglorious end to what was supposed to be a feather in the cap and a shining moment for the AAG. On an unrelated matter, following on the position articulated by an opinion writer ‘There cannot be a ministry with other ministries inside of it’ (KN June 21) perhaps it can be explained how the Department of Culture, Youth and Sport within the Ministry of Education has a permanent secretary of its own?
