A mother of four was yesterday granted bail in the sum of $300,000 after she appeared in
the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman for uttering forged US currency and obtaining money by false pretence.
Shellon Davis Gillians denied the first charge which alleged that on June 21 at Georgetown, she uttered to Marcia Lowenfield, six forged American 50-dollar bills.
It was further alleged that on the same day in question at Georgetown, with the intent to defraud, she obtained $60,000 from the virtual complainant (Lowenfield) by falsely pretending to her that the US currency she had in her possession was genuine.
It is also alleged that on the same day in question without lawful authority or excuse she had in her possession six forged US$50 bills.
Police Prosecutor Shawn Gonsalves had no objection to bail being granted to the defendant.
The prosecutor told the court that on the day in question the defendant went to the virtual complainant’s workplace which is located in Kingston, Georgetown, and purchased a GT beer.
The court heard that the defendant asked the virtual complainant to change US$900, but the woman only agreed to change US$300.
After Gillians left the shop, Lowenfield discovered that the US currencies were fake and she contacted the police. Gillians was then arrested and charged for the offence.
The Magistrate ordered Gillians to post $100,000 bail on each of the three charges.
She will make her next court appearance on July 17.
