Prayers are important but taking physical care of the body is also necessary. This assertion was emphasised by Pastor Derek Anderson of Agape Assemblies of God Church, LaGrange, West Bank Demerara, on Saturday.
Pastor Anderson’s remark was premised on the fact that far too often many Christians are of the belief that prayers alone could be the answer to their health problems. “We have a spirit and we have a body, too. We have to take care of that body also…We can’t just depend on the spirit.”
He recalled that over the years at least three members of the church became gravely ill and died. Among them was one who was diagnosed with cancer. “We prayed and we fasted; we did everything and they still died. It was really hard,” related Pastor Anderson.
But it was those cases that served as an eye opener. According to Pastor Anderson, “We started to look for ways and means to help our members to not just use the prayer aspect of things but also to take care of their health as well.”
The church has since collaborated with a number of individuals and organisations that are known for promoting healthy eating and other measures to improve one’s health.
On Saturday, the church collaborated with the Region Three Health and Wellness Club, the Public Health Ministry and the West Demerara Regional Hospital to host its first Health Day.
The event saw a number of health tests including BMI, pressure and sugar tests being conducted.
Among those targeted were members of the church and residents of the LaGrange community and neighbouring environment. The intent, according to Pastor Anderson, was to help those who accessed the services offered to get a better understanding of their health situation so that remedial measures could be taken wherever possible.
The Health Day was organised by the Women’s Department of the Church. “I am very moved by the attendance despite the fact it is raining,” said Pastor Anderson when he learnt that some 100 persons had already registered to access the services offered by the Health and Wellness Club by noon yesterday.
He anticipates that Health Day will become a regular feature for the church.
