A miner was on Tuesday killed and two of his colleagues were attacked by a swarm of Africanized bees at Imbaimadai, Region Seven. The dead miner has been identified as Donald McIntosh, while the two survivors are Raymond Oselmo and Tyrone Charles.
According to information received, the miner and his colleagues were driving an excavator to a mining camp when they pushed down a tree to create a track—the bee hive was in the tree.
This newspaper was informed that the bees immediately started attacking the men. McIntosh reportedly ran towards the beehive while his colleagues ran in the opposite direction.
Apiarist Linden Stewart said that he received a telephone call about the incident at Imbaimadai and after making contact with the relevant authorities, he and another individual visited the area to locate and destroy the hive.
Once there, Steward said that he was informed by the survivors that they were going into the mining camp, and as they were driving, they had to clear the bush, since no heavy-duty machinery had passed there in the last three years. While clearing the bush, they pushed down a tree which had the hive.
The two miners jumped off the excavator and ran in an easterly direction while the now deceased McIntosh, who was operating the excavator, ran towards the west.
Steward said that McIntosh ran into the bee hive and died there. When his colleagues returned an hour later, they discovered his body.
The apiarist said they have ascertained that when McIntosh jumped off the excavator, his feet got stuck in quicksand. He reportedly managed to quickly get his feet out of the long boots he was wearing and managed to run a little, but collapsed after running into the hive.
