The army has deemed the conduct of Capitol News cameraman, Rudy Morris, as reckless and stupid.
In an unusually harsh statement yesterday, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) said that it was astonished at Morris’s actions.
“After a thorough investigation into the allegations brought about by Mr Rudy Morris, a cameraman attached to Capitol News, who attempted to breach the Operational Area of the Guyana Defence Force at Mure Mure, Kaieteur National Park.”
The army said it is astonished, that even after duly cautioning the said journalist about the nature of the operation and the various dangers that were present, he nevertheless, took it upon himself, whether for personal or financial gain or otherwise, to attempt to breach our security ranks in order to access GDF’s operational space.”
The army would be referring to a reported incident Sunday in which the cameraman and a man of Amerindian descent, were detained in the Kaieteur National Park after going to shoot footage of a signboard that show the boundaries of the park.
The army kept the two overnight.
The area had been under a Joint Service control after reports came out of significant mining in that protected area.
Several dredges, fuel and other items have been seized and persons were detained and later released.
According to the army, an operational area duly falls within the jurisdiction of the operating force.
“Illegal mining operations are not only a breach of the law, but can also attract violence amongst illegal miners, who are bent on breaking the law. As such, access into an operational area must be scrutinized not only to ensure the security of all citizens, but to enable operational forces to accurately discern between the illegal miners and law abiding citizens.”
The army insisted that Morris’s actions may have been an outright attempt to provoke a confrontation, or some other adverse response from the GDF, for the sake of sensational news.
”The GDF deems the conduct of the journalist as reckless, irresponsible and outright stupid. We therefore, call on the press association to condemn these actions and encourage journalists to adhere to the rule of law and to respect our operation space.”
The issue had drawn debate between the press body, conservationists and others.
