Dear Editor,
It was indeed very shocking to see the condition under which police officers dwell in at the Eve Leary Compound housing the Force Headquarters in your Monday 5th June 2017 edition front page. I am a female rank stationed at the same compound and living under those same unsanitary conditions, indeed I pity those male ranks that get wet each time it rains; they have left their comfortable homes to live in far worse conditions.
How can the police force take people’s children out of their homes and place them in these conditions? No one in the police force was picked up on the roadway and selected to become a police rank. My concern that I want to raise is, under the building where I am residing, there is a pool of stagnant water which is leaked from an underground septic tank. The water is discolored and very putrid, and breeds mosquitoes and worms. My stomach is sickened from that unbearable stench and I know it doesn’t affect me alone. We do not receive cooperation when it comes to reporting certain faults pertaining to our work and health. Police back bite each other and senior officers victimize junior ranks who speak out. I see this happening every day and as such, a lot is being left unsaid. Not to forget the issue of ranks being transferred to far off locations for speaking up for their rights. I was once sent to interior location (being victimized) but had to relocate after I contracted malaria virus.
The walkway to my barrack room is always soppy with slush from the septic tank’s stagnant water and pit maggots can be seen crawling about. This is the area we have to traverse to hang our washed clothing. Editor I am hoping my letter captures the attention of the President and all his relevant Ministers and those authorities of the Guyana Police Force, who can bring the necessary changes. I can say so much more but I want to be short. Thank you for publishing my letter.
Concerned Police Rank
