A porter was yesterday placed on $150,000 bail by City Magistrate Leron Daly after he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts to answer to a charge of inflicting grievous bodily harm.
Twenty-four-year-old Ron Walker of Kuru-Kuru, Linden Highway, denied the charge, which read that on June 2 at Industrial Site Ruimveldt, Georgetown, he unlawfully and maliciously inflicted grievous bodily harm to the virtual complainant, Mohanlall Sohanlall.
Police Prosecutor Preston John objected to bail being granted to the defendant citing the serious nature of the offence and the fact that the victim is still hospitalized.
Prosecutor John went on to tell the court that the victim received injuries to his face and was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where he was treated and sent away, but was later admitted to the institution on June 8 to undergo an emergency surgery on his face.
The defendant was represented by attorney Darren Wade, who in an application to secure bail for his client told the court that his client is the father of two young children and is a first-time offender.
The attorney went on to tell the court that his client came to the court of his own free will, and if bail is granted he will return to court for the trial.
The court heard that the defendant and victim are known to each other and they both work at the same company.
On the day in question, the two men reportedly got into a heated argument over a customer, in which the defendant wanted to fetch sand for the individual.
When the customer chose Sohanlall to fetch the sand, Walker got upset and allegedly punched the victim to his face. Walker will make his next court appearance on June 9.
