Dear Editor,
Please allow me to add my thanks to an industry which has contributed to Guyana’s development that has allowed it to be where it is today. First to begin with it is SUGAR that brought Africans, Chinese, Portuguese and Indians from the poorest parts of our mother countries. The Amerindians were here and the country was all jungle, but today they get all that they wanted and even more; we do not have a problem with that, but why is so much emphasis placed on destroying the livelihood of Afro and Indo Guyanese without having any alternative employment in place?
Our Agriculture Minister seems to be stuck in reverse gear. Sugar and rice are foreign exchange earners and also the two industries with the largest list of employees, and when rice and sugar are doing well every business thrives. I have worked for the AFC and voted for this change because the campaigners of the coalition who are now President ,Prime Minister and Ministers promised voters that they will not close the sugar industry and abandon the rice industry, otherwise I would not have voted for CHANGE .
The following is an extract from page (13) of the APNU+AFC Manifesto for 2015 elections. And I quote:
“Way Forward for Guysuco. APNU+AFC will convene a Commission of Inquiry into the operations of the Guyana Sugar Corporation and with the support of an expert multi-disciplinary group, review, analyze and recommend the way forward for the Sugar Industry including options for infusing critical investments and the optimum utilisation of its valuable infrastructure.
Appoint an Expert Team to investigate and remedy the problems plaguing the Guysuco Skeldon Factory.
Appoint a competent and representative Board of Directors to Guysuco as part of the programme for the depoliticisation of the enterprise…”
What has happened to those promises? I ask the coalition to read their Manifesto to refresh their memory of their promises to this nation. They should go to the internet and look how the people are living in Somalia and Haiti and see if that is what they want to bring into Beautiful Guyana.
Mr. Prime Minister I suggest you utilise your lavish spare time to read your MANIFESTO and fulfill your promise (IT IS TIME).We would like to know if IT IS TIME TO CRY.
