The Number 51 Police Station and its ranks have once again come under heavy scrutiny after a couple of Number 57 Village, Corentyne, Berbice made a report of an alleged beating by a fellow villager. The couple is accusing the ranks
of dragging their feet on the matter. They are in fear that the accused might continue assaulting them, and worse.
Seudial Persaud, of Lot 38 ‘A’ No.58 Village, said that he was visibly suffering from facial injuries including a discolored swollen left eye, a fractured nose that was still bleeding and scratches about his face.
He recounted, “He hit me with he hand and when meh holla ‘ow uncle help’ dem people come and rescue meh and dem carry meh in the yard. Blood binna leak down”. Persaud stated that the accused dealt him several cuffs to his face, he eventually collapsed and the accused escaped.
Alleged Police Neglect
Persaud’s wife, Geeta Beharry, said that since the incident which took place on May 29, 2017 the police have made very little effort to apprehend the suspect.
According to her, after the beating, she and other relatives took Persaud to the No.51 Police Station. He was asked by the ranks to acquire a medical from the hospital and return to the station. They complied.
A statement was given by Persaud detailing the events of the alleged attack by his fellow villager. However, she said that it has been over a week and nothing has been done. The assailant is said to be roaming the village as normal.
Beharry lambasted the ranks at the No.51 Station for not taking the matter seriously. She claimed that the police claimed that her husband “na give the name of the suspect and me remember going there with my mother and me husband when we tell dem the bai name Star from No.57 Village”.
She stated that calls were made on Friday to the Central Police Station and she was told to contact the Whim Police Station. They were told to call the No.51 Police Station. This she said frustrated her and she resorted to the Prime Minister Representative’s Office and related her plight to the Prime Minister’s Representative.
She repeated what the ranks told her. “My husband have to go and look for the guy but dem is the police they have to do dem duty, the station Sergeant and a female police told me that.” Beharry disclosed that the police have not made any effort to locate the man. “De bai (accused) tell we how he boss buy over 51 station that dem can’t do he nothing. It look like that happen fa real,” Beharry stressed.
The family of the injured man is pleading for justice since Persaud is said to be at home and is unable to work due to the injuries sustained in the attack.
Meanwhile, the suspect is still at large living comfortably and going about his business at his home at No.57
