…ready to help alleviate problems of flooding residents
After two weeks of sick leave, Minister of Social Cohesion, Dr. George Norton, has returned to work. He returned to his office at the Ministry of the Presidency yesterday.
And Minister Norton was only too willing to make it clear that there is absolutely no truth to reports circulating that he has plans to resign.
“I myself found that as news to me,” said the Minister who had also heard such reports of himself. He added, “I never even entertained the thought of resigning. The only way I’m leaving is if I am fired.”
Although he admitted that he still has some more recovering to do, the Minister said that he is ready to continue his role as Social Cohesion Minister in the areas that his service is required. “I must say I am not 100 percent but I didn’t expect to be of 100 percent now either.
“I miss work and in spite of the fact that I’ve got persons in place who could take the work forward, I am anxious to get back to work,” said Minister Norton.
He hopes to continue outreaches into the hinterland communities and, according to him, he is very concerned about how the residents in Regions Seven and Eight are coping with the flooding.
“As soon as we can get it arranged we will travel there [to the regions]; there is nothing like having a hands on approach and look see of course of what is happening,” said Minister Norton.
According to Minister Norton, he has a keen understanding of the affected areas. “Since I am no stranger to those areas I will be in a very good position to make suggestions and come up with ideas to help alleviate some of the problems they are facing right now.”
Last month Dr. Norton was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation [GPHC] for medical attention. It was suspected that he had suffered heart related complications. He was however discharged a few days later with no such diagnosis.
He’d told this publication that while he suffered no pain, he did experience some dizziness and light-headedness.
An electrocardiogram [ECG], ultrasound, CT Scan and MRI all revealed that nothing was amiss with the Social Cohesion’s Minister’s heart. “I am happy it had nothing to do with the heart but I myself thought it had to do with the heart at first…If anything was going to happen it might have been caught in the ‘nick of time’,” Minister Norton had admitted.
His blood pressure had however soared considerably which might have resulted in the ‘unwell’ sensations he experienced.
The Minister is convinced that his hospitalisation might have been linked to the fact that he has been working for nearly two years without vacation leave.
“I have been travelling quite a lot; I think I might have just overdone it. I feel ok right now but I have been sleeping a lot in the hospital, and now since I am at home,” said Minister Norton had revealed.
In fact, had he not been hospitalised, Dr. Norton would have travelled to Argentina the very weekend he was hospitalized.
“Many a times when you travel overseas you go into a conference and then you leave from the conference for the airport. And in the hinterland too I had some thrilling experience, all a part of the job. I think that has had an impact on me,” Dr. Norton disclosed.
Although he has had a hectic work regimen, he’d revealed that he had always ensured that exercise, in the form of running, was a staple. This he believed might have helped to extend his physical resilience.
