When he was just a teenager, Joshua Baveghems was accused of brutally murdering his girlfriend,
Angela Mc Allister.
Yesterday, he pleaded guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter after appearing before Justice Navindra Singh at the Georgetown High Court.
According to the allegation, the incident occurred on August 8, 2015. The facts of the matter presented by State Prosecutor, Tamieka Clarke, outlined that Baveghems committed the act after accusing Mc Allister of cheating on him.
The accused was 17-years-old at the time.
He is said to have mercilessly bludgeoned his teenage girlfriend with a spade; dragged her by the hair out of his mother’s Diamond New Scheme, East Bank Demerara home and viciously hacking her to death.
Yesterday, Baveghems told the court that he was sorry for his actions. He didn’t know what came over him at the time of the incident. “I couldn’t control myself. I am sorry for what happened”
In his plea of mitigation, Attorney- at -law, Keoma Griffith, asked the court to consider his client’s age at the time the act was committed.
“He was still very young….And now he has thrown himself at the mercy of this court.” The lawyer also noted that his client loved his girlfriend very much.
“There is not a single day that he doesn’t think about her.” Additionally, Griffith said that his client is on the road to rehabilitation.
“He attends chapel very day and he has accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Saviour.”
The Attorney said that his client is now 21 years old. “He has taken up the trade of Boxing and hopes to represent Guyana one day on the international stage.
However, Prosecutor Clarke asked the court to consider that the crime was linked to domestic problems and should not have ended in death.
She noted, “The victim was only 14 years old when she was attacked by the enraged accused. She went to his mother’s Lot 538 Eleventh Avenue home, to sort out the allegations of infidelity.
The accused beat his girlfriend with a spade; dragged her by the hair out of his mother’s Diamond New Scheme, East Bank Demerara home and viciously chopped her about her body.
The victim sustained 19 incised wounds and died subsequently.
“His mother and siblings were at home at the time; they ran to the neighbours house for rescue.”
However, considering among other factors, the age of the accused at the time the act was committed and fact that he accepted responsibility for his actions, the Judge sentenced Baveghems to 12 years in prison.
