Dear Editor,
Is the community of Cummings Lodge forgotten by the Government and Mayor and City Council? Cummings Lodge is densely populated by students of the Cyril Potter College of Education and the University of Guyana due to its proximity. Lectures at the University of Guyana go until 9:15 PM after which students living in the community who are unable to secure transportation are forced to walk the pitch dark road.
The University students are preyed upon by criminals who rob them in the shadows of their dark playground. The previous administration during their election campaign in November of 2011 promised the community more street lights and better infrastructure, to no avail. Hence I am appealing to the Ministry of Public Infrastructure to discontinue ignoring the plight of our students living in Cummings Lodge.
The south-west area of the community has ten streets and is only accessible via one bridge and Dennis Street, Sophia though each street has a respective bridge of which all except one are dilapidated. The trench that runs along UG road serves to be one of the main drainage channels of the community and is blocked with vegetation and heavily polluted, it was last cleaned about five years ago and as a result the community is prone to slight floods due to rainfall. I expect the mentioned bodies will heed the problems of my community and help keep our students safe and the community “clean and green.”
Lionel Mohamad
Resident and student of UG
