Dear Editor,
I was in the National Assembly on May 8 when the sitting ended some time after 10pm, which is the usual time for debates to conclude. There were occasions over the past two years when sittings went non-stop until 3 am the following day, but MPs had to vote by motion for sittings to go on beyond 10 pm.
On May 8, the Prime Minister notified the House that debates on the opposition motion would end after speeches from two MPs, one each from the Opposition and the Government and that the debate would resume on June 16. All MPs voted in favour of the PM’s motion. I am shocked therefore to learn that PPP MP Anil Nandlall has claimed that a curfew was imposed on the debate and that the debate was “stifled”.
This is not true and I hope Mr. Nandlall would be asked to explain why he has made that attack on Parliament.
