Seon Smith was remanded to prison after he appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan on Thursday, charged with trafficking in narcotics.
The 21-year-old man pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleged that on May 6, at Itaballi Landing, Mazaruni River, he had 530 grammes of marijuana in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.
Police Prosecutor Arvin Moore told the court that the Fourth Avenue, Bartica resident has no antecedents.
The prosecutor further stated that an analyst’s report is still outstanding from the case file. The Chief Magistrate transferred the matter to the Bartica Magistrate’s Court for May 31.
Meanwhile in another matter, Shemroy George, 27, of 241 East La Penitence, Georgetown, was placed on $10,000 bail for allegedly being in possession of five and a half grammes of cannabis.
The court was told that police ranks were conducting raid exercises on America Street, Georgetown, when the defendant was stopped and searched, during which time a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems were found in his pants pocket. However, attorney at law Paul Fung-a-Fat told the court that the narcotics were found on the floor in a minibus.
George, a minibus conductor, was instructed to return to court on May 29, by Magistrate Judy Latchman.
