A 40-year-old West Berbice man was on Wednesday sentenced to three years in prison while awaiting trial in the Berbice High Court.
Dwayne Morgan, of 20 Plantain Walk, Blairmont, West Bank Berbice, presently serving a six-month sentence for assaulting his reputed wife, was jailed at the Fort Wellington Magistrate’s Court for inflicting grievous bodily harm, while he awaits trial in the Berbice High Court for attempted murder in a third matter.
The case before the court as presented by Police Corporal Raquel Mars stated that because of a very abusive relationship, Morgan’s reputed wife had returned to her parents’ home at Bush Lot, West Coast Berbice. Morgan, however, did not give up, and was in the habit of going to Bush Lot from time to time to get her attention, even though he was not welcomed in the home.
On December 12 last, Kegan McAlman, a cane harvester who also lives at Bush Lot, was retained by the father of Morgan’s reputed wife to fix a TV antenna. While McAlman was on the on the job, Morgan turned up at around 13:30 hours, jumped the fence, and forced his way into the home of Mr. Rupan Jagjit, accusing his estranged wife of having an affair with McAlman.
McAlman in turn picked up his tools and was leaving when Morgan went after him with an electric iron and assaulted him, causing him grievous bodily harm.
The matter was reported to the police at Fort Wellington and Morgan was subsequently arrested and charged on December 19. The matter went to trial and Morgan was found guilty.
When Morgan appeared before Magistrate Rhondel Weever at the Fort Wellington Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday for sentencing, the Magistrate noted that Morgan seemed to have no regard for human beings’ feelings, as he believes that he can assault people at will. The Magistrate then handed down a three-year sentence. Morgan will have to return to the Berbice High Court some time later, where he will stand trial for attempted murder.
