Dear Editor,
We, the employees of a security service operating in the area east of Vlissengen Road, are voicing our concern over the Company’s refusal to comply with the order to pay the minimum wage increase. Every time there is an increase the Company delays for (4) four months to pay the increase.
That delay creates a retroactive sum which they fail to pay. It seems to us as though this delinquent Company is getting coverage from some left over corrupt oligarchs from the previous administration that are still functioning within the system at the Ministry of Social Protection (Labour Department) that should have been long gone with their masters are still receiving honey from the hives. Apart from the Honourable Minister, there may be a few exceptions, but to select them would be difficult; it is like asking a man to count salt by the grain.
When the minimum wage was increased from one hundred dollars ($100) an hour to one hundred and forty dollars ($140) they took four (4) months to pay the increase and never paid the retroactive. The same was done when the increase was made from 1st July, 2013. We are of the opinion that the above mentioned department is where conspiracy is taking place.
Honourable Minister, we are appealing to you because every time we lodge a complaint at the Labour Department; we are being told by officers there that the Finance Department of a certain ministry that uses the service of this guard firm did not pay this particular company the increase on the previous occasion. Our representatives were told by one officer when we made out our complaint that the time had expired. We are not Signatories to this company agreement and should be paid according to the order from the date stated (January 1, 2017).
We collectively would like this company to be investigated by the entities mentioned-below for the following breaches.
(1) The Finance Department of a major Ministry – (for over payment) false claims.
(2) National Insurance Scheme – for not paying workers contribution.
(3) Guyana Revenue Authority – for tax evasion and not paying contribution.
(4) Ministry of Social Protection Labour Department — violation of workers’ rights, for corruption and violation within the employment system for financial benefits (officers). We have copied this letter to the Ministry of Presidency, Hon. Joseph Harmon.
