Dear Editor,
Reading the praise being showered on a KFC outlet, reminded me of the much improved dining out/takeaway standards in present-day Guyana. I last visited roughly 2 years ago. On my last visit, I was fortunate to have experienced visits to eateries, on my own, taken to by friends of my age group to places of their choice, and by my younger in-laws, to theirs, some out-of-town. At every one of them, I experienced not only excellent service by staff, but with such style!
In restaurants, I was very impressed not only with the fine presentation of meals, but also with the practice of the ‘black folder’ being used for presenting and settling bills. Most of all, we were allowed to bring away what was not eaten there, neatly packed. I liked that most of all, being accommodated at a room-only guest house. Even with takeaways, the portions were generous. Many food outlets were places to be proud of.
I wondered if the American influence was involved. I remembered the experience I had a few years ago, when a London colleague of mine, having lived in America for 25 years, holidayed in London, and we visited a KFC in Central London.
We shared a 4-person table and sat opposite each other, she in the chair alongside the walkway from counter to door. A waitress, probably about to go off duty, came along with a mop and started to clean the walkway. To my surprise and embarrassment, my friend told her to stop, as she was “still eating”. A Brit would hardly do that – no dust was involved.
Taken by surprise, the girl stopped, the manager came along, looked at me and smiled. I had mentioned to the cashier beforehand that my friend was visiting from America, and was trying to make a choice from the wall menu. So the manager appreciated the Yank connection.
Guyana has not failed in every respect. What we seem to need is consideration for our country and respect for fellow citizens, as a whole. But we will get there in time.
