A resident of Westminsiter West Bank Demerara has lost US$2,000 worth of goods. Michael Mohabir sent two barrels on March 26, 2017 from the United States to Guyana. The two barrels arrived in Guyana one month later,
on April 28, 2017.
Mr. Mohabir received a phone call informing him that the barrels had arrived. He said that he asked why he was not contacted prior to the arrival of the barrels. Laparkan informed Mr. Mohabir that there was no need for that and that someone needed to be at home to uplift the barrels.
Mr. Mohabhir stated he heard an echo when the Laparkan team delivered the first one off the truck. The 49 year old immediately objected that something was not right. He said that he asked that the barrel be opened in everyone’s presence. When the barrel was opened one surround sound system, four bottles of coffee, fifteen t-shirts, seven jeans, two S4 Samsung Galaxy and two Iphone 6 plus (16G) cellular phones were missing.
Kaieteur News was shown the video of the encounter with the driver and the delivery guy. To Mr. Mohabir’s surprise a brush cutter that was in the barrel was still there. He believes that the perpetrators were looking for prized items and missed the brush cutter.
When the barrels were packed back on March 25, 2017, Mr. Mohabir said that him and two other relatives had to sit on the barrels to lock them. The phones were bubbled wrap and put into jeans pockets. When he received the barrel everything was tumbled.
US$400 was paid for the two barrels in March 2017 to the shipping company for door to door service.
Mr. Mohabir was told to come into Laparkan, where he filled out a form detailing items that were missing. He was then told that he cannot claim for the missing cell phones and the music system. When he questioned why, he was told that he did not declare them. He queried how could he, if he was not present when the barrels were opened.
Kaieteur News spoke to the shipping company and was told by Claims Officer, Kester Edwards, that the process when items are missing is to fill out a form and submit it. He noted that not all persons would be able to make claims.
