Dear Editor,
For about four months now while going to Georgetown daily from the East Coast, I note with interest two holes on the road by Vlissengen Road and Carifesta Junction. As the months go by these two holes get bigger and wider that are now blocked off by the Police Force barricade. What bothers me is most of our Ministers in Government pass their daily; the President and Prime Minister too. The police blocked off this piece of road that slows down traffic, yet no one in authority thinks of fixing this road junction that is getting worse daily. Very soon this road will be cracked into two and traffic will be diverted to Sheriff Street.
The fact remains that the police barricade is on that bad piece of the road tells me clearly that the police are aware that this road slows down traffic so why is it that the police don’t get these road builders to fix this piece of bad road? I guess that the City Mayor, Chase Green and Town Clerk Royston King passes that junction constantly too but they just put a blind eye to it. But they were very efficient to implement the parking meter and they will still implement it sooner or later. I also see not far from this bad piece of road some drag-line and hymacs digging a very deep trench as if they are building a next pyramid for Pharaoh in Guyana next to Damon Statue.
These people can see the holes on the road and the barricade, they have the equipment and the tools to fix these two holes in less than one hour yet they turn a blind eye to it. Now the rains coming in May-June these holes will get bigger and erosion will cause that entire road junction to break in two or create a big accident. When will they fix it? Only when an accident occurs and kills innocent citizens? A sudden blackout at nights turns the entire junction pitch black and those driving to Georgetown cannot see these barricades and holes on this road, thus great accidents will occur sooner or later.
If we cannot fix basic road problems then it’s not possible for this current administration to fix this country’s economic problems. These pot holes are all over. I noticed another big pot hole opposite Guyana Stores and Muneshwers that has some sand in it and a few sticks around it that can even cause a vehicle to divert and run into Guyana stores supermarket. I wonder who will fix that big pot hole and when? Where I live on Agriculture Road, Mon repos, we have two miles of growing pot holes in this road, it gets worse daily. I wrote several times about it yet no one came to fix this road. The NAREI big wigs drive here daily and the NDC chairman even the police, yet they put a blind eye to it.
I am calling on our erudite Minister of State Joe Harmon and Mr. David Patterson Minister of Public Infrastructure to get these pot holes fixed immediately at Vlissengen and Carifesta Junction before a severe accident occurs. I want to suggest to the Mayor and City Council to get a Road Builders Committee set up that will travel the entire city to fix deplorable roads immediately. Our basic problem in this country is incompetence and negligence. We wait until something is completely destroyed before we rescue it long before it’s destroyed.
I have seen this from the past PPP Administration and the same incompetence has repeated itself in our current administration. It is about time our current administration govern this nation with more diligence and competence. I wonder who will fix the hundreds of pot holes in Agriculture Road, since over 7 people were killed on this road including two ten year old children not very long ago by accidents.
