There was widespread confusion Monday due to several city roads being closed. The Guyana Police Force (GPF) has confirmed that due to the 2017 Westminster Attack outside of the United Kingdom House of Parliament,
security measures have been heightened around Public Buildings.
“A” Division Traffic Officer Superintendent Calvin Brutus said that based on concerns of the 2017 Westminster Attack. Measures were taken to close vehicular traffic on several roads last Monday during the 64th sitting of the eleventh Parliament.
Superintendent Brutus explained that due to the foreign attack around the UK parliament building, the GPF found it necessary to up security measures for Guyana’s Parliamentarians.
On the March 22, 2017 a terrorist attack took place in the vicinity of the Place of Westminster in London, seat of the British Parliament. Four persons died including a police officer, and 50 persons were injured in this major terror attack.
The attack was treated as “Islamist-related terrorism” by the police. Briton Khalid Masood drove a car into the south side of Westminster Bridge and Bridge Street, injuring more than 50 people. The attacker was shot by a police officer and died at the scene. Masood’s motive was said to be revenge for western military action in Middle East.
In Georgetown, persons also complained that they had to pay more than normal to go home, mainly because buses had to travel a different route to get to their destination. The route 43 minibus park on High Street and the route 42 minibus parks were relocated to Water Street in the vicinity of DDL Wharf.
Also, there was the closure of the southern carriageway of Carifesta Avenue from 17:30hrs to 00:00hrs to facilitate works by the Ministry of Public Infrastructure. Traffic flowing from Kitty Public Road was diverted to south of Vlissengen Road.
