– Conquerors consolidate runner-up spot
By Franklin Wilson
The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) has continued to rewrite the record books on the local football landscape by winning the second round of the Stag Elite League (SEL) with a game still to play following their emphatic 4-1 win

over debutants Topp XX on Sunday afternoon last at the Tucville ground.
In wrapping up their 9th win in this the second half of the league, the Army, destined for the CFU Club Championships next season along with Fruta Conquerors, also remained flawless as the only team not to lose any matches.
What makes the fairy tale run of the boys from Camp Ayangana all the more delightful is the fact that they have also won the League Leaders Tournament and will be aiming to complete a perfect season by winning their last game, a potentially mouth watering showdown against Conquerors and then the Big Four Tournament which will feature the top four clubs at the end of the league.
Leading the GDF to victory was the tournaments leading goal scorer Sherwyn Caesar who netted their second goal of the match and now moves to 9 overall in the competition, three more than closest rival, Conquerors’ Eon Alleyne.
Delroy Ferdinand had handed the GDF the lead on 26 minutes and it was the only goal of the

first 45 minutes in the early Sunday afternoon encounter. Topp XX which had taken a beating from Victoria Kings on Friday night last, 5-1, made the task of winning for the GDF very difficult as they stood solid in defence whilst putting in a few offensive moves of their own.
But they {Topp XX} eventually wilted under relentless attacks from the GDF which fired in three goals in the second half to the Lindeners consolation strike which came off the boot of the indefatigable Travis Waterton in the 70th minute.
But by then, the GDF were already up by three on account of goals from Caesar on 50 minutes and Kelvin Sullivan in the 63rd minute. Capping off a fine performance from the GDF was second half substitute Leo-orion Lovell who netted his first SEL goal in the 75th minute.
In the day’s feature game, Fruta Conquerors eased to a 2-0 win over Buxton United and in the process consolidated their hold on the runner-up position as no other team can challenge; the winners 7th win while it was the losers 5th defeat.
The young Buxton side put up stern resistance against their more seasoned rivals and it was the nippy Pernal Schultz who looked sharp in the match that broke the deadlock a mere two minutes before the half.
Shultz received the ball midway in the Buxton half and worked his way past two defenders before slotting the ball past the advancing Darren Marks in goal. Elder statesman Anthony Abrams who replaced his younger counterpart Ryan Hackett in the 52nd minute proved that he still has what it takes to breakdown any defence and score.
Four minutes after being introduced, Abrams doubled the advantage of the Tucville team to wrap up another victory as the remaining minutes did not produce anymore goals.
The penultimate day of the league, tomorrow will see one match being contested at the same venue when Monedderlust and Buxton face off from 18:30hrs.
