Kevin Abbensettes gave Police the early lead with Stephon Boodie and Linton Mentis maintain the form for an explosive finish from Fraser. Super Upcoming Runners (SUR) ‘A’ team and the Mercury Fast Laners (MFL) team finished second and third respectively.
Kezia Bess followed suit in the Women’s 4x100m race, handing over to Tandika Eastman, who established a lead on the first straight, before Shauncel Adams gave national sprint champ, Alita Moore easy work to bring home the bacon.
The Police ‘B’ team of Cindy Fraser, Tasnica Lovell and Tandika Burgess finished second, while SUR’s national schools champion, Cassie Small anchored their team which consisted of Tiffauna Garnett, Alicia Vanderhyden and Cassie Tixie, to third place.
Police also completed wins in the Female Distance Medley; 4x200m Mixed; the male and female Sprint Medley races. The Male Sprint Medley race in particular had the packed facility thrilled as Police came from behind to win the event.
Sprint prodigy, Tyrell Peters gave SUR a superb start that seemingly set them up for victory in the 1500m male medley race. However, Quacy Morian dug deep on the final 800m leg, which helped him to close in on SUR’s Ronaldo Thomas almost 50m ahead.
Thomas wilted as Morian took over the race, leaving him to battle UG’s Salim Yussuf, who gave him a challenge on the turn. Yussuf, however, could not find the fight for Thomas and was left in the order of SUR second and UG third.
Each race carried a cash purse of $50,000 with $25,000 going to the winner; $15,000 for second place and $10,000 for third. The event brought the curtains down on the well-attended 2017 relay festival and family fun day.
The National Sports Commission, Ansa McAl under its Lucozade and Stag brands, Ministry of Social Cohesion, C. Mohan Contracting Guyana Inc., R&D Engineering Services, K&B Mining and Insurance Brokers Guyana Ltd. were among the main sponsors of the event.
